Adolescent Substance Use Disorders

Oakland Family Services strives to provide quality, individualized treatment to adolescents and their families to help them achieve and maintain abstinence.

Teen users are more likely to be experiencing co-occurring mental health issues. Their use of alcohol and drugs is often opportunistic and involves binging. They also have more trouble projecting the consequences of their use into the future. It is critical that treatment services are appropriate for the adolescent’s cognitive, physiological and emotional stages of development. At Oakland Family Services, we follow the Best Practice Guidelines as established by the Alliance for Children and Families. These guidelines include individual and group therapy modalities, focus on family therapy and family dynamics, cognitive behavioral therapy, and Twelve Step and Motivational Interviewing. Oakland Family Services has adopted other key elements to adolescent treatment services by the National Institute on Drug Abuse “Drug Strategies” and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMSHA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

These elements include assessment and treatment matching, a comprehensive/integrated approach, family involvement in treatment, developmentally appropriate treatment, efforts to engage and retain teens in treatment, qualified staff, gender and cultural competence, continuing care and monitoring treatment outcomes. Our services meet the needs of adolescents 12-18 years old and their families.
